As Ward Support Volunteer you’ll help with a wide range of tasks and be part of a dynamic, compassionate team of staff and volunteers. Patients may be admitted for a variety of reasons including, symptom management, and respite care or for end of life care. You’ll provide a non-medical service to patients and visitors, ensuring that their experience is as comfortable as possible. We take a completely person-centred approach to all our services and support which means each day will be different, however activities in this role will commonly include: • Introducing yourself to patients and their families. • Reading handover information from the volunteer on shift before you, and writing your own notes/handover at the end of a shift. • Answering patients’ call bells and referring to the relevant nurse. • Helping keep all ward areas and communal spaces clean and tidy. • Helping visitors to settle in and unpack, making sure they have refreshments. • Taking patients into the gardens if requested (checked with a staff member first). • Sitting with a patient when asked by nursing staff, where appropriate and only if you feel you are able. • Checking if towels / drinks / TV are needed by patients. • Minor clerical duties such as mailings and photocopying. • Supporting with meal times, which may include helping serve lunch, managing the drinks trolley, or taking menu orders.
