We will offer you a place where you can be yourself and where there are no limits on what you can achieve. With us, you can take ownership of your career and have honest conversations throughout. You would join an ambitions firm with a clear strategy for profitable growth where you can get early responsibility and early involvement in growing the business. Here you can expect a competitive and fair reward as well as recognition based on all round performance. This forms part of our internal promise to you, The Deal, between the firm and its employees.

We have one of the world’s leading marine and international trade practices, offering a breadth of services to clients active in the shipping, commodity, insurance and offshore sectors that few other firms can match.

Our practice is international in nature and serviced by specialist lawyers operating out of our London, Dubai, Greater China, Seoul and Singapore offices.

Our growing commodities team is led by some of the most respected names in the field and acts for a diverse range of clients involved in the extraction, production, supply, carriage, storage, financing and industrial consumption of energy and natural resources. Our clients include mining groups, energy companies, trading houses, banks, utilities, industrial consumers and shipping companies.

Disputes form the core of our practice, with a non-exclusive focus on physical commodities, trade/commodity finance and shipping-related matters. Our caseload includes both litigation and arbitration, and is typically cross-jurisdictional in nature. We are often instructed at an early stage and spend much of our time helping clients solve problems in real-time before they manifest into disputes.

We also maintain a transactional and advisory element to our practice, assisting clients on a variety of off-take, supply, distribution, master trading, tolling and other agreements, as well as financing structures, charterparties and contracts of affreightment.

The role

In this role, you will focus primarily on litigation and arbitration matters. Litigation work will typically be before the Commercial Court in London but may involve co-ordinating proceedings in other jurisdictions. Arbitration work may be institutional (typically ICC, LCIA or SIAC), trade (typically GAFTA or FOSFA), ad hoc or on LMAA Terms.

You will develop your legal skills as a contract lawyer (particularly with respect to the sale, carriage, storage and financing of goods) and be given exposure to a wide range of clients operating in the energy, metals and soft commodities sectors. You will also have the opportunity to broaden your skillset to include drafting and advisory work.

Day to day case management, including:

  • Actively managing case progress
  • Acting as the key contact point for clients, experts and counsel
  • Drafting witness statements and other court/arbitration documents
  • Drafting inter parties correspondence
  • Legal and procedural research and drafting advice
  • Attending meetings and hearings

Marketing, including:

  • Preparing legal articles and updates
  • Developing your own internal and external network of contacts
  • Attending business development and profile raising events (client networking events, attending seminars, giving talks etc.)

  • Qualified lawyer with litigation/arbitration experience, preferably to include commodities and/or shipping work.
  • Ambitious self-starter
  • Resilient with the ability to handle setbacks and pressure
  • Willingness to take responsibility early on
  • Excellent academic and professional qualifications
  • Active interest in business development activities
