Docklands is the semi-official new name for the pool of east and southeast London once the largest port in the world.
Historically, archaeological evidence suggests the first dock in London was built during Roman times, and emanated from the base of Walbrook Stream. The docks' prime was in the pre-war years when trade between the colonies reached fever pitch. At any one time you could expect to find two thousand ships loading and unloading their goods. World War II naturally led to a lull in traffic, and the Blitz's bombs levelled the area.
Catalysed by the reign of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, the London Docklands were redeveloped to produce a second financial hub and rival to the Square Mile. The London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was formed to complete this massive project, deciding to scrap business taxes and introduce compulsory purchase orders to entice trade to the area. This transformation saw the population in this eight and a half square mile region double, and created 43,000 jobs.
Literacy references to the Docklands are featured in Charles Dickens novels 'Our Mutual Friend' and 'Great Expectations'. Joseph Conrad's 'The Mirror of the sea' provides a memorable description of the docks, their buildings and people.
