As most students study at some point in their academic career, geology is the branch of physical science studying the Earth's materials and environmental impacts on it since it began. There are many areas of study including volcanoes, floods, oil and gas, metals, rocks and climate. Geologists can be out in the field in the natural environment, or in the lab testing materials, but either way what they find can help predict future disasters or shifts in the environment.
Geologists are employed by a variety of sectors such as oil companies and government agencies working in areas tailored to their employer's objectives. Some roles requires extensive travelling and field work, so if conducting research in a lab or classroom is more appealing, be sure to look into a branch of geology that best suits your interests.
A Bachelors degree in science is generally required, though many go on to higher education whether to become specialised in a particular area of interest, develop research or even to teach. Employment outlooks are generally quite good for geologists, especially with the global push for green and environmentally friendly methods. In addition to science, roles will also require good math and written skills to accurately convey findings. To become a professor at a University level a PhD will be necessary.
Not all workers in geology are geologists however. Many companies and organisations employ IT, cartographic, photographers and even journalists to aid research and help get the word out about the latest research and discoveries.
