Health visitors are experienced and qualified registered nurses or midwives who work to promote good health and prevent illness in the community. They spend most of their day visiting people in their homes. They deal with all ranges of people in their care from new mothers and children aged under five to the elderly.
As a health visitor, the core of your work is to provide information, practical care and support to help your clients in order that they can cope with the difficulties they are experiencing. In this advisory role you might be helping new mothers on questions such as how to help their newborn sleep well, aspects of feeding, hygiene and safety. You might give advice on post-natal depression and might counsel people on bereavement issues, or being diagnosed HIV positive. As part of the health visitor's remit to serving the community, you might be in charge of coordinating child immunization, organising special clinics, drop-in centres and so on. You will also work alongside other agencies such as social services.
Other related careers that may be of interest are community nursery nurse, community matron, dietitian, sexual health advisor, health promotion visitor and maternity support worker to name a few.
