Bordering Greater London to its south, home county Hertfordshire is a fairly densely populated, lively hub in the East of England. The county's name derives from heort ford, Anglo-Saxon for 'deer crossing' (of a stream or river), and its existence was first recorded officially in the 1011 Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. For a hundred years before that Hertfordshire had served as agriculture support in the surrounding area for the fortress built at Hertford, under Edward the Elder's rule. As with Oxfordshire's oxen, deer feature prominently as a county symbol on emblems and flags.
In more recent times, the town of Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire played host to the canoeing and kayaking slalom events of the London 2012 Olympics. Hertfordshire is also good at breeding and attracting acting talent, with Martin Freeman a current resident and Ron Weasley actor Rupert Grint born and raised there.
