Working as a pharmacist or in a pharmacy setting is a specialised field of medicine that requires a great mind for science and eye for detail. Nowadays, Pharmacists are helping doctors identify and diagnose patients more than ever before. The two main settings are hospitals and community pharmacies, both catering to different types of medicine and interactions. Hospitals require more Doctor and Nurse collaboration and very little patient contact, while working in the community involves directly helping patients.
A long training process is required to become a full fledged pharmacist, though there are other paths in the field requiring less education that can also be hugely rewarding.
Pharmacy assistants or technicians work under a registered Pharmacists in hospitals or local chemists, where they help in preparing medicines, labeling, answering questions of supply and helping patients with questions or concerns. These rolls require good standing GCSEs in English, maths and science, while on the job training will help toward earning a level 2 NVQ Certificate.
Pharmacists are highly trained as their in depth knowledge of medications and the effects are crucial to patient treatment. The industry is constantly changing, with new medicines being invented all the time keeping things fresh and exciting. Education wise, a four-year postgraduate pharmacy degree is required followed by one year of training and the passing of a registration exam.
