Planned maintenance is pretty much what its name suggests. It is an industry in which work is carried out on a task before it is necessarily needed. Say, for example, a tree is looking old, decrepit and potentially dangerous. Planned maintenance would involve a tree surgeon coming to chop it down even if it just looks a touch dangerous. This would be to avoid it falling down and possibly causing financial damage or fatalities.
Whilst, in the short-term, planned maintenance might look expensive and inefficient, it could actually save a lot of money, time and lives in the long run. Planned maintenance is generally of a practical nature (chopping down trees, renovating houses, replacing pipes) but it can also be useful in other industries such as computing or financial affairs.
Pay would be varied based on the skill and expertise required for the work, but, if employed by local Government to work on public property, payment could be on the generous side. Work in this area would be mainly for tradespeople, such as builders, carpenters, plumbers etc. Whilst NVQs would be required to get into the industry, the only thing really required to generate planned maintenance work would be hard work and networking.
