Working in probation can be a challenging yet extremely rewarding profession. While there are various roles, main tasks centre around looking after offenders as they take on probation or community service sentences. The goal is to rehabilitate those convicted, while being eyes for the court as they complete their sentence.
There are 35 Probation Trusts across England and Wales in charge of overseeing recently released offenders and those serving out court-ordered community service. These roles are always in demand as a good probation worker has a difficult combination of empathy, toughness and the untainted desire to help offenders become productive members of society.
A Community Payback Supervisor takes on the role of supervising offenders on community work placements while keeping certain principles intact, while a Treatment Manager can run behavioural workshops and provide support. Probation Officers can work both in or outside prison, particularly with serious convictions such as sexual or violent nature are not fit to take on community service. In these cases, probation officers work on assessing the offenders progress during their sentence, running behaviour programmes and preparing for release back into the world. Probation Officers working in the community ensure a smooth running of their jobs, while also being available for advice and guidance. All probation roles help the courts to determine how ready the offenders are for release, which means fair and unbiased reporting is critical.
No formal qualifications are required, though good written and verbal communication skills are important. Entering a training scheme or having previous experience through social work are also excellent stepladders to a career in probation.
