Sales assistants are the wheels that make the world of face-to-face consumer sales turn. They work wherever there are goods or services being sold to the public. Most commonly they are found in retail and ecommerce, and to a lesser extent in catering and call centres. The difference between sales assistants and sales people is that assistants usually (but not always) do not try to persuade customers to buy a certain good or service, they merely help them acquire it.

They do this in a number of ways, for example by helping customers decide on a product that meets their needs, physically locating products for customers and by dealing with complaints and other issues that customers may be having.

However for many people, becoming a sales assistant is not seen as a longterm career path, and it is often a relatively easy way to earn some money whilst in education or working on something else.
