Working in Social Service is about helping those in need who can't necessarily help themselves. Set up by the government, there's a range of departments and roles to take on, including caring for children, elderly or the homeless. Tasks can range from helping struggling families raise their children, protecting children from abusive homes, helping asylum seekers get settled into life in the UK both legally and emotionally, and helping the elderly look after themselves when they're on their own.
Any area that peaks interest can often be applied to social services and helping others. Expertise in areas such as architecture could help build affordable housing, while a law degree could represent the vulnerable in court. Specialised degrees are not always required, with many jobs working in administration or organisation.
Social Workers work with people and families to help get them better or safer conditions. This may mean protecting from abuse or helping them live independently, often requiring a lot of collaboration with others in the health, education or housing sectors. Most work for NHS Trusts, voluntary or private sectors, while some even create their own companies to allow for contracted work. An Educational Psychologist is an example of a role requiring higher education and specialisation, though this job would entail working with vulnerable children to help them complete their studies. A Housing Officer works with social housing, working with low income earners to make sure they and their families can live in an affordable and well looked after home.
There are also other ways to be involved in social service no matter your skills, all departments also need IT staff, accountants and office managers to keep things running smoothly.
