The Tourism industry encompasses all manner of leisure and hospitality services and provisions. These services are mainly rendered to those spending their leisure time in different locations, and can encompass businesses of culture, food, drink, sports, or accommodation. Customer services are a prominent element of tourism related work, and as such an affable and approachable manner are paramount. Positions in this field often demand work in unsociable hours in order to best accommodate the customers' needs.
As many individuals and businesses prefer to travel abroad if given the opportunity, and therefore much of the work in this industry is either related to international travel, or takes place abroad. Most tourist ventures are private enterprises, and salaries vary according to the nature of the service being provided. The tourism industry has much in common with the leisure, travel, and hospitality sectors, and may branch out into these fields.
Typical jobs include travel agent, tour guide, and translator. Other roles may be more organisational or administration-based, with the aim of ensuring that trips and holidays occur without a glitch. Many of these roles may take place abroad, and nearly all of them require some manner of liaising with those abroad. Often work in the hospitality sector becomes allied to tourism work if it occurs in a location or institution which solicits much of its work from tourists.
